Trước hết, bạn download ứng dụng Yahoo! Friend (dung lượng nhỏ gọn 1.01 MB) tại đây, sau đó tiến hành cài đặt bình thường (lưu ý: bạn phải thoát khỏi Y!M 9.0 trước khi bắt đầu quá trình cài đặt). Khi kết thúc, một thông báo sẽ hiện lên, bạn nhấn nút Finish để hoàn tất quá trình cài đặt.
Khởi động lại Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, đăng nhập vào tài khoản của bạn và mở cửa sổ tán gẫu lên (conversation). Lúc này sẽ xuất hiện thêm một menu Special Emoticons trên dãy menu lệnh và nút Special Emoticons ngay góc phải bên dưới cửa sổ.
Để gởi một biểu tượng đặc biệt cho đối phương, bạn chỉ việc nhấp chuột lên một trong 2 vị trí trên rồi chọn chủ đề ưa thích, gồm: A New Collections (bộ sưu tập hình mới), Angry (giận dữ), Applause (hoan nghênh), Blushing (xấu hổ), Bye (tạm biệt), Confused (ngượng ngùng), Cool (mặt ngầu), Devil (kinh dị), DontTellAnyone (không gọi điện thoại), Hallo (chào), Happy (hạnh phúc, vui vẻ), Love (yêu), Party (dạ tiệc), Sad (buồn), Series (dãy biểu tượng)…
